When writing an autobiography, do you need permission to use real names of the people in it?

September 3rd, 2010

I’m writing a novel and the names of the characters in them are currently true to who was in my life – but I am unsure of whether or not I need written permission from the people I write about to use their names in the book due to privacy issues?

You need permission if they’re still alive.

There’s nothing wrong with changing the names. But definitely ask permission if they are ok with a representation of themselves being written by you.

Good luck!

Did you hear about the most famous Atheist comes back to faith?

September 3rd, 2010

This was on the news.
Famous Atheist Comes Back to the Faith
Teresa Neumann (June 4, 2009)
"How did materialism [secularism] account for music, or human language, or love?  Such mysteries finally convinced Wilson that we are spiritual beings."
Janie B. Cheaney, writing for World Magazine, asks, "Why is religious conviction, which secularists have always advised should be a private matter, such public news? Hardly a week goes by," she notes, "without some screaming headline about major shifts in personal belief."

Case in point?  Cheaney points to the recent conversion of renowned author and former atheist A. N. Wilson, a journalist famous for his novels, children’s books, biographies and histories.
"Wilson noticed a difference between the skeptical and the devout," writes Cheaney.  "The perception of his atheist friends seemed rather parochial and flat. And phenomena lurking outside a strict materialist system gave him pause: How did materialism account for music, or human language, or love?  Such mysteries finally convinced Wilson that we are spiritual beings, and that the religion of the incarnation, asserting that God made humanity in His image, and continually restores humanity in His image, is simply true. As a working blueprint for life, as a template against which to measure experience, it fits."

I did not hear about it.But this is the climax of the sweetness of God.you know at one point we all walked after the folly of our minds, lifted up our tongues to vomit all manner of ridicule against our creator. But the scripture says in the days of our ignorance, God behaved as though he did not see,but kept on calling as to repentance and at the appointed time,we received his mercies by grace.Such stories inspires me to share the word of God the more, for one day it will not come back void, but accomplish the will of God.thank you for sharing.

Should i buy an external DVD player for my laptop to play region 1 US DVD’s or get software to do this?

September 3rd, 2010

Hi,
I have seen the other similar questions about playing region 1 DVD’s on a UK PC or Laptop, so i understand that the region on the player is set and can only be changed 5 times. So my feeling is that if i buy an external DVD drive and set it to region 1, or better yet buy the external drive from the USA so its pre set then i will be able to watch Region 1 DVDs without making any alterations to my Laptop.
I’m wary of installing software from unknown publishers off the internet you see and since something like AnyDVD costs $49, i may as well buy the external DVD drive off ebay for about the same price.

What are your thoughts on this?

Hardware or Software?

External DVD-Rom

What happens if an authors book does not sell and they have already spent their advance?

September 3rd, 2010

What happens if an authors book does not sell and they have already spent their advance? Will they have to pay the publisher the amount they received as an advance?
I’m so confused.. one says yes and the other no.. could someone please clarify :)
Everyone seems so split on this..

The publisher takes on the risk that the book won’t sell… that’s why publishers are so picky about choosing books to publish! It’s not the author’s fault that the publisher didn’t market the book well, or that the publisher decided to publish a book that nobody likes. They can’t take back the advance they paid for that book.

The author won’t get royalties… that’s the financial hit the author will take.

edit ——

Every contract is different, but I’ve NEVER heard of an author agreeing to sell his story to a publisher with a "I Swear My Book Will Make You Money" guarantee with full refund of the advance if it doesn’t actually work out.

If you’re interested, here’s a book about many of the legal rights that authors/publishers go through in the process, including publishing rights, international rights, etc. http://books.google.com/books?id=NbYCZMJhG8sC

Hope that helps!

I need a good writer, help with writing an autobiography?

September 1st, 2010

Okay, so for a school project I have to write an autobiography about myself and I need a few starting sentences..
And a list of interesting hobbies and interests.. Thanks!!

Let me get this straight… you need us to list interesting hobbies and interests so you can pretend you’re into them to make your autobiography interesting? Am I missing something here? Help me out.

It’s an autobiography… it’s about yourself… I don’t see how that would be hard for anyone.

How do I make a website, now that I own a domain name?

September 1st, 2010

I purchased a domain name, but I need to know how to make a website. I don’t think I want to use a template from google sites–i want something more unique.
I need to put my music up for sale for $1.00 a song. Do I need to hire someone or can I figure this out on my own?

I want it to have the following:
art
pictures
video links
shopping cart linked to paypall to buy songs
sample songs
biography
online press kit
comment board

As you may know a domain name is just a name, not a real website. If you are going to create your website: 1- Buy a domain name. A domain name is a name you want to call your website (ex: www.yahoo.com). To get a domain name, you have to pay an annual fee to a registrar for the right to use that name. 2- Buy a web hosting service to provide your online space and enable you to get your website online at your purchased domain name.

If you want to start your website I recommend purchase your domain and hosting together. In this way it is possible to get your domain for free. Some hosting services offer this gift today.

As an experienced webmaster I recommend BH web hosting which I’m sure it would work for you and fulfill all your requirements. They have a really great offer for hosting & I have used them for over 3 yrs now, and have never had a single problem with them.

You can reach reviews about this web hosting provider and its latest DISCOUNT COUPONS at:

http://www.threehosts.com/reviews/1st

Only $3.95 /month (with discount coupon)

They also offer "Free Site Builder" that helps you build your web pages without difficulty if you are not skilled in using any website creating program (WYSIWYG: What You See Is What You Get). You can use this service optionally. You can also create the pages offline with your favorite program (DreamWeaver, FrontPage, Microsoft Publisher, iWeb etc.), and then upload them to your web host. This is another easy way to get your website online.

******IMPORTANT********
* This service was awarded the “Best Web Hosting OF The Year”.
* If you sign up for this service you will have $75 credits to advertise your website with the google & yahoo search engines for free!
* You Can Register A Free Domain or Use Your Existing Domains. They Support All Domain Names.

Do i need to take permission from Book Authors ?

September 1st, 2010

Hi All.

I am preparing a Video for a Machining Operation. Also i have to show some related archive(document) of the Machining operation which is avaliable on Google Books.

I was opting to screen record the books ( not only just the book content but also also author details, web address).

So, do i need to take permission from book authors so as to avoid myself landing in a Copyright Infringement.

Thanks All.

You need to obtain permission unless the book is in public domain.

Why is every new dvd release usually on a tuesday?

September 1st, 2010

I’ve been noticing for the last couple of months that every new dvd release has been on a tuesday, why is that, just a coincidence or is there a back story to that?

We can safely assume that music people pioneered the Tuesday release schedule.

According to the many media experts, Tuesdays are the most promising days for home-entertainment industries to release, say, 13 shiny new tracks from Toby Keith. Tuesdays are also the easiest days for data crunchers to begin tracking weekly sales of said stuff.

"It’s quite simple, actually," states Mark Berman, of the trade magazine MediaWeek. "Since Monday is the day after the weekend, consumers are not at their height of awareness. And because Friday is the day before the weekend, consumers are preoccupied with other things. That leaves Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday. Since Tuesday comes first, it leaves Wednesday and Thursday open to actually buy [and track sales of] the product. So, Tuesday it is!"

A detailed, day-by-day explanation of this theory:

Mondays: Employed consumers are way too busy to shop. Bunches of forwarded emails about sleeping newborn pandas and kitty cats who dance, dance, dance have amassed in their inboxes. And then there are all those meetings about expediting deliverables.

Wednesdays: Rock deejays are too busy hooting about "hump day" to promote new tunes, making the middle of the week useless for the music industry.

Thursdays: This day is way too hectic for the music business, making CD releases unthinkable. Crusty blues singers are busy shooting a man in Memphis. Country session musicians are suffering their usual truck breakdowns in the Valley and calling their club promoters asking for rides.

Fridays: This day belongs to the movie industry. Nobody out here messes with Weinstein.

A music manager put it to me this way: "As I learned it, there had to be one specific day to level the playing field in reporting sales clearly–all the more important since the advent of Nielsen SoundScan. Tuesday was an arbitrary day selected to get the records in the stores early in the week but still allow a window for late shipments due to the prior weekend."

Occasionally, some company will get squirrelly and try to release a book or a CD on a Monday so that it can report higher weekly sales figures. According to another music insider, these companies are generally seen as scourges that need to be napalmed from the air.
